DROWSY BUT FINALLY starting to feel well rested, I splashed water on my face. The towel from my shower was wrapped around my chest, but I preferred to use the facial scrub in the sink. I ignored the black stains in the caulking. Even though I sprayed the bathroom with bleach regularly, the mold was a permanent reminder of how shitty this tiny apartment was. At least it was all mine. I saved every penny I could, because when Addi turned 21, we were going to leave New Orleans and get a nice place in a bigger city after exploring the world to decide which city that was. Barbara would have let me stay at the home as an adult, but I needed my space to feel like I stood on my own two feet for once.

“I’m not so sure I want to leave the South.” I recalled Addi’s sweet voice, soft and cautious during one of our last conversations. “Would it be so bad if we stayed in New Orleans for a few years? Rented a house on the river with a yard and big trees?”

I growled, swiping the gritty cleanser viscously off my face. My answer hadn’t been polite, and I was ashamed of myself then for my tart response. Now that Addi was gone, I was boiling mad at myself. So desperate to spread my wings and fly, I hadn’t even taken one measly little second to listen to Addi’s ideas.

Swiping at my eyes, I blinked up at my reflection. And shrieked. The scuffed mirror showed a monstrous shadow looming behind me.

“Kane! What the hell?” I snapped, ripping the towel off the counter and smacking it against my face.

“Well hello to you too, love.” His voice was liquid silk, a smile dancing behind his words.

What the hell did he have to be so amused about?

I huffed. “I don’t appreciate being snuck up on and—and I’m using the bathroom, wrapped in a towel! Would you please leave and give me some privacy?”

“Fine, if you don’t want to hear the news,” he drawled, voice dripping with sensuality.

He needed to get over himself. He’s not some alpha sex-god.

The corner of his mouth quirked.

I narrowed my gaze and glared through the mirror at him, not offering the politeness to turn around. “Can’t the news wait?”

“It could, but I thought this quest was as important to you as it is to us.” Kane held up his palms, claws flashing with lethal promise. “My mistake. I’ll leave and return in an hour at dawn—”

“Stop.” Taking a deep breath, I managed to grind out, “I’m listening. What’s your news?”

“The host for that ball you found the invitation to, he’s a member of the cult.”

At the nightwalker’s words, I spun around, elation shooting through my pulse. Possibly because my towel was cheap or probably because I hadn’t secured it tightly enough—it slipped.

I squeaked, clutching at the remnants.

There was no missing the hunger that flashed through the monster’s features. His hot gaze roved over where I clutched the towel to myself.
